Tennis fans in China did everything they could to get a glimpse of Roger Federer when he made a surprise appearance on the streets of Shanghai.

Except, it really wasn't Federer at all.

Turns out it was an American comedian named Donald Mahoney who decided to test a personal theory that all Westerners look exactly the same when they are in China. To prove his point, Mahoney got decked out in Federer's trademark Nike gear and surrounded himself with several convincing - yet totally fake - bodyguards, and made an impromptu appearance on a busy street.

Mahoney found himself quickly followed and mobbed by fans seeking an autograph from the man who they thought was Federer. He obliged by signing Federer's signature with his left hand (Federer is right-handed) and posed for keepsake photos. Though the comedian looks like nothing Federer and talks with a strong Boston accent, no one seemed to notice the difference, as they thought it was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the mighty Federer.

Do you think this hoax was in poor taste? Or a funny gag? Let us know in the comments.
