(May 28, 2010) World No. 1 Roger Federer cracked the top 10 — of an exclusive club today.

The top-seeded Swiss became the 10th man in the Open Era to record at least 700 career match wins with an emphatic 6-4, 6-0, 6-4 win over German qualifier Julian Reister.

The victory vaulted Federer into the French Open fourth round for the sixth straight year. Federer will face either 20th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, his doubles partner when the pair won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, or 92nd.-ranked Italian Fabio Fognini for a spot in the quarterfinals.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion trails Boris Becker by just 13 wins for ninth on the all-time win list. Jimmy Connors holds the Open Era record with 1,242 victories, though Federer has won twice as many majors as eight-time Grand Slam champion Connors.

Federer received little resistance from the 165th-ranked Reister. The reigning Roland Garros champion struck 34 winners and did not face a break point in the match. Reister finished with 10 winners.

Federer is bidding to reach a record-extending 24th straight major semifinal.
