(June 6, 2011) Roger Federer withdrew from the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, Monday, despite signing a career-long agreement to play the event last year.

“I've unfortunately had to pull out of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. I am very disappointed as it is one of my favorite tournaments on the ATP World Tour, but my body and especially my groin need a rest after the French Open,” Federer said in a statement to the tournament.

“After talking with my team this morning, I feel that it is too big a risk to take a chance and aggravate it before Wimbledon. I send my very best wishes to the tournament organizers and all my fans in Halle, and again I am so sorry I can't go this year. But I will see you next year."

His decision to withdraw did not sit well with Ralf Weber, the tournament director, because they assumed Federer would be making an appearance.

“We expect that this contract will be fulfilled in person – and not just a declaration of intent,” Weber said.

He added that he was stunned at Federer’s decision to withdraw, which leaves sixth-ranked Tomas Berdych as the top-ranked player in the draw, followed by Gael Monfils at No. 9.

“Our plans for the past year have been nearly exclusively with Roger appearing,” said Weber. “And he never gave us any doubts that he had health problems. I clearly expressed my disappointment to his management.”

“I am naturally really sorry for our loyal fans who will now not see Roger,” he added. “Because we keep our word with the spectators.”

Tournament organizers are considering giving ticketholders for Tuesday and Wednesday a special bonus in light of Federer’s withdrawal, although nothing has been announced yet.
