Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova Top the List of Most Googled Female Athletes of 2011

By: Ann Stark

(December 26, 2011) Last week Total Pro Sports released the list of 30 Most Googled Female Athletes of 2011—over half of which are tennis players. As determined by the number of Google search results in the past 12 months, female tennis players dominated the list, occupying the top 5 spots and 18 total spots of the 30.
Serena Williams topped the list with 125 million hits. Maria Sharapova came in second with 54.7 million hits. Not far behind was current World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki with 37.2 million.
2011 is the second consecutive year Serena Williams has found herself at the top of the list. After spending the majority of the season out due to injury, Williams still received more than twice as many hits as the second most Googled female athlete, Maria Sharapova.
Retired Anna Kournikova also appeared on the list. The tennis pro turned reality show trainer grabbed the number 4 spot with 36.7 million.

Among others included in the top 30 were Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic, Maria Kirilenko, Petra Kvitova, Li Na, Victoria Azarenka and Sam Stosur.

Even Yanina Wickmayer is on this list. So then, of course, I had to Google the most googled female athletes to see who else is on the list. Surely, there was enough room for such a list in this article.
