Serena Williams: "I Don't Love Tennis Today"

(January 2, 2012) Thirteen-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams told Australian press after her first-round win at the Brisbane International that she isn’t passionate about tennis.

“I mean, I don't love tennis today, but I'm here, and I can't live without it … so I'm still here and I don't want to go anywhere any time soon," Williams said. "It's not that I've fallen out of love; I've actually never liked sports, and I never understood how I became an athlete. I don't like working out; I don't like anything that has to do with working physically.”

Williams has a number of off-court interests, including fashion design and the occasional foray into acting. The American said her other interests keep her motivated to play tennis.

“I just want to be able to do other things I am doing and expand on that - I think that will help keep my motivation up (in tennis)," the 30-year-old said.

Yet she isn’t afraid to admit that she has thought about life after she retires.

"I have always been preparing myself for life after tennis,” she said.

Please, God, let this article not draw out the Serena haters. She sounds a lot like Agassi. In her book, On the Line, she recalls how her father was a stern taskmaster and how she and Venus tried to get of practice. On the other hand, she loved to compete, and most of all she loved to WIN.
Serena haters, stay away. PLEASE.

Serena, you have the biggest tits and ass in (Women's) tennis by a factor of 10........your anticipated retirement from Women's tennis would gladly change the landscape in more ways than one............as an example, I might see the ball girl behind you for the first time in at least 15 years.........not to mention the collective sigh from the line judges worldwide.........Don't let the double-wide door kick you in the ass, Serena..........You are truly world class in the rear end, better than a Porsche 911 air cooled, and that is saying a lot............

Shes saying this incase she losses the tournament. She has an excuse. She thinks we're that stupid.

I salute Serena for her honesty, and certainly American tennis will suffer upon her retirement. She's intelligent enough to make plans for her life after tennis. All the players complain about the length of the tennis season, but she's the only one with guts enough to speak what the others feel. Yes Serena, there is, indeed, life after tennis, and you're smart to pursue it now.

I would love to hear from the real Americans that are proud to have a true champion playing for our country.

I love Serena's honesty and candor. Everyone has been in a profession ( and successful at it) which at some point they wonder why they do it or even how they happened into it in the first place. Why is she any different? She's a professional athlete and human too. Give her a break.... she doesn't play tennis to for our benefit. I applaud her for recognizing there is more to life than her profession.

Serena, You may be a great tennis player but your example to young inspiring players is abominable. You need an attitude adjustment...I'm a tennis player and I understand frustration but you have anger issues and your mode of
speaking leaves a lot to be desired. Grow up!!

I just knew it. Serena haters go home, please. Your venom adds absolutely nothing to the conversation and makes your opinions suspect.

@ Jim Jones - said it best "The sooner the better" . She doesn't love tennis and tennis never loved her anyway so goodbye.... The sport is better without you. Wish you had realized this a few years ago and retired back then! You and Roddick!

Everyone has a calling in this world. Who knows why a Black man that was treated so poorly by white people chose to teach his children the game of tennis. Despite that, he created not one but two champions. The fact of the matter is that if white Americans understood what black people still have to endure, you would understand why she feels the way she does. The truth is that everyone that wishes Serena leaves tennis also wish to never see a black person unless they are looking up to them begging for something.

OMG
The Williams sisters have been widely hated in the sport of tennis for whatever reason. And by the looks of these post, that hate continues. I commend Serena for being honest with herself and for having guts to share her feelings with the world.

you people on this post are really full of hatred. when a truly detestable (i.e renowned quitter and cheater) justine henin talked about retirement you had nothing to say. but serena gives her honest opinion about something and you lose your collective minds because of underlying seething hatred. another reason why the tea party and tennis really don't mix.

Grow up people she has earned the rights to be honest. And she is a champion for our country. Play hard serena.

It is pretty clear to me that Serena has earned the right to do just about whatever she wants in the world of tennis. She has had her bad moments, of course, and if she wants to suffer a bit of burnout that is her right. Serena, together with her sister on the women's side, along with Andy Roddick on the men's side, have done more for U.S. tennis during these past many years than anyone else.
