(October 4, 2011) Serena Williams missed the first two Grand Slam tournaments of the year and made her comeback at Wimbledon after being plagued with serious illness and injury. According to Tennis.com and her manager, Jill Smoller, the World No. 14 will not participate in any other tournament events in 2011.
Her official website and the WTA schedules confirmed that she will not participate.
The American withdrew from the mandatory tournaments in Tokyo and Beijing due to medical issues without any stated reasons behind them. There are six events left in total including Linz, Osaka, Moscow, Luxembourg, Istanbul and Bali. The last two tournaments are the Season-Ending Championships but Williams had not qualified for those.
She will be fined for missing the required events but should finish the year in the top 20 because she had no points to defend from this time last year.
In 2012, Williams did commit to playing for the United States Fed Cup Team when they play Belarus on February 4-5 at Worcester, Massachusetts, according to the USTA. Serena and Venus Williams have not competed in the Fed Cup since 2007.
This still does not qualify them for the 2012 Olympics that requires they play twice in two seperate calendar years.
