Serena Williams Withdraws from Pan Pacific Open

Serena Williams’ vexing right foot is at it again.

The organizers of the
Pan Pacific Open announced Wednesday that Williams has pulled out of the tournament, which is set to start Sept. 26.

Williams cut her foot on glass outside a restaurant in early July, and had surgery on it two weeks later. She first pulled out of her World Team Tennis commitments, then the entire US Open Series, then the Open itself.

She returned to practice last week, and was seen at the
Burberry Fashion Show in London on Monday, one of a number of social engagements she has partaken in since the infamous injury occurred.

The Pan Pacific Open, which runs through Oct. 2, still has an impressive field including two-time Grand Slam runner-up
Vera Zvonareva, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, world No. 6 Jelena Jankovic and defending champion Maria Sharapova.

Williams did not play Tokyo last year, so she will not lose any points off her ranking, but if she will see her No. 1 ranking threatened is she continues to miss time.

Last year she picked up 140 points for a third-round appearance in Beijing and another 1,500 for winnint the Tour Championships.

If she were to miss the year-end tournament, she could fall tumble significantly. Currently, Williams (6,995 points) has a 1,085 point lead on Wozniacki (5,910) for the top position.
Venus Williams is third with 5,796, followed by Zvonareva (5,550) and Kim Clijsters (5,325).

Despite pulling out of the Pan Pacific, Serena has said she plans to play for the United States in the
Fed Cup final against Italy this November.
