Serena Williams gets bitter on Twitter in flap with Farmers Classic

By Nick Georgandis
TennisNow.com

Serena Williams
and the people running the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles engaged in their own version of “The Biggest Loser” last weekend.

Williams, currently sitting out the US Open Series with her foot injury, had been out to the Farmers for some P.R. work earlier in the week, posing for photos with fellow American James Blake while sister Venus was signing copies of her new book, “Come to Win.”

But when Serena wanted complimentary tickets for the Farmers, officials told her they would be $100 per. Unless the Farmers was just really hard up for money, asking the best player in the world, and one of the most recognizable faces in women’s athletics period to cough up the dough for a ticket is one of the dumbest ideas around.

Serena’s response made the situation worse, and showcased serious lack of judgment on her part. Rather than laugh it off or suck it up, she headed for the Internet and blasted the Classic via her Twitter account.

In a five-minute span on Saturday, Serena Tweeted:

“Omg! ! The @farmersclassic tennis tournament in LA is charging me $100 a ticket... After I plugged them!!! Lol ill send a bill for my plug!”

“@farmersclassic = use @serenajwilliams than over charge her to see tennis! Lol. Anywho don't go if u r in LA”

“@farmersclassic = use @serenajwilliams than over charge her to see tennis! Lol. I would have paid been happy to $1000 If I did not plug them.”

There’s no two ways about it, the people at the Farmers are absolute morons for not giving her free tickets. The first day of Marketing 101 tells you that having celebrities at your event is a gold mine.

But Serena’s actions are worse because it makes her look like a whiny diva, which isn’t exactly what she needs less than a year after her rant at the US Open, not to mention her recent late-night out on the town photos while recovering from a foot injury that is keeping her out of tournaments like the Farmers.

Complaining about $100 ticket prices when she’s made $4.27 million in prize money alone this year could seriously turn off fans that scrape together their hard-earned money to buy her clothes, accessories, and hand bags, not to mention the cost of the tickets to see her play.

I'm confused. Serena backs out of the tournament because of a questionable injury. According to the WTA rules, she has to do PR to fulfill her tournament obligations. She wouldn't be at the tournament otherwise. She then demands free tickets and complains to her fans when she doesn't get them. I don't see how an appearance by Serena would make up for the loss in ticket sales from her pulling out of the tournament, so I can see why the tournament dir. would be hesitant to give out freebees.

It also makes you wonder what kinds of demands Serena will make once she retires from tennis.

It was probably more the principle than the money. Isn't that kind of obvious?

IT's just insulting, having a celebrity to go to your event is free publicity. She just did free promo work for them too. It's like Kobe Bryant, posing for pictures at some Sparks Games to promote it. Then coming in to a Sparks games and being asked to pay for tickets. HEck lots of people would pay just to see Kobe at a sparks game, why charge him?

In the long run, it hurts Serena more than Farmers. Who knows...two years from now, the tournament will be called Aetna's Classic w/ new management. But Serena is always Serena - That's bad brand management.

She is a whiny diva... and one that can't spell. She writes "than" when she means "then"! She earns enough to pay for the tickets! If she wanted some, she should have asked for them before she agreed to "plug" their tournament.
I went to se her pratcice at Cincinnati a couple years ago and, after waiting by the court she was to practice on, she switched to center court so no one could watch her. What a disappointment to all the kids there! I don't think much of her these days. She just keeps getting worse in her actions.

You can take the girl out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the girl.

Serena thinks she is "entitled". Spoiled brat if you ask me. Ever notice at the end of a match she and Venus always shake the judge's hand first. Most great champions allow the loser the respect and courtesy to shake first. Not them. No class.

As far as I am concerned I DO NOT care whether I ever see Serena play again . She sounds like an animal on the court.Certainly has NO class. Time to retire Serena-goodbye.

wow, such vitriol. there are many people who sound like animals on the court, also many other players who act like divas. also, i dare any one of you to twitter or text accurately 100% of the time. leave the girl alone.

It's not fair of Serena to attempt a boycott on Farmers Classic. If she wanted free tickets, she shouldn't have just show up at the gate demanding them but had her agent set it up prior to the match. It's very immature.

I READ MANY OF THE COMMENTS. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU WANT HER OUT OF TENNIS. WHAT AMERICAN TENNIS PLAYER WILL TAKE SERENA OR VENUS PLACE?

Would Roger or Nadal been asked to pay? It's not the money but the principal. I applaud Serena for exposing them. No seems to have a proble exposing anything Serena does. Continue to STAND UP!!

What is $100 to Serena?
A few years ago, a male tennis celebrity (was it Agassi?), paid to watch a tournament despite the fact the tournament host offered him complementary tickets when they recognized him at the ticket counter. He insisted to pay for the ticket. He did it for the game, he did it for tennis - and nothing more.

Deedee that would require entirely too much class. Serena has exhibited her victim/entitlement mentality way too often to be a good ambassador to the game. She is in it for one reason - Serena.

Stardom has got to her head and her small mind is clearly not coping with that very well. I think she is not the only one who would throw a childish tantrum like that but most snobs would actually have some decency and not go public with their petty complains or even try to sabotage the whole thing. Tennis world will breathe a huge sigh of relief once she hangs up her racket.
