(July 27, 2010) Silenced in the first set, a grunting Shahar Peer roared back for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Daniela Hantuchova in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford today.
Hantuchova pounded Peer in a lopsided opening set. How bad was it for Peer? She won just two points on her first serve in the set.
Shaking off the sluggish start, Peer played more patient points to try to stretch the slower Hantuchova.
Earlier, defending champion Marion Bartoli beat tennis mom Ashley Harkleroad, 6-1, 6-4.
The sixth-seeded Peer could face Maria Kirilenko for a spot in the quarterfinals. Continuing her push to crack the top 15, Peer raised her record to 32-13 on the season.

Peer, who reached at least the quarterfinals in four of her first five hard-court events this season, produced a strong clay-court season, reaching the semifinals in Stuttgart (losing to Justine Henin), the Madrid semis (losing to Venus Williams) and the French Open round of 16 where she fell to World No. 1 Serena Williams.
