(December 8, 2011) Robin Soderling will miss the Australian Open, according to his twitter page.
Soderling has been sidelined since July because he acquired mononucleosis. Since then, he’s attempted to come back on several occasions but has been unable to because of lingering effects of the illness.
On his twitter, Soderling wrote that although he is feeling better it will still take some time for him to practice in earnest.
“My goal is to start with practice in January and I hope for tournament comeback in February but at this stage it is hard to know when and where. I hope my body will allow me to do that,” Soderling wrote.
Soderling won four titles in 2011, including the last tournament he played in before his illness (Bastad). In July, he was ranked No. 5, but has since fallen to No. 13.
The Swede is not the only tennis player to get mono. Roger Federer suffered from an acute case of in 2008, and Mario Ancic, Justine Henin and Nicole Vaidisova.
