Janko Tipsarevic
took a hard loss against the Indian underdog Somdev Devvarman, 7-5, 7-5, 7-6 (3). Despite being ranked 48 places behind Tipsarevic, Devvarman stood strong with the 45-ranked Serbian for two sets, tiring his opponent out and taking the third set in a tie break.

With this win, Devvarman puts India and Serbia (last year’s winner and current Cup holders) neck and neck at 1:1.

Argentinean Juan Monaco beat out the Romanian competitor, Victor Hanescu, 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. With an earlier win by David Nalbandian, Argentina leads 2-0 against Romania during a difficult first day of competition during which he began crying after a tremendous effort to gain a win.

World No. 7, Tomas Berdych beat Mikhail Kukushkin, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3, giving the Czech Republic a 1:1 tie against Kazakhstan. Leading the Kazakh competitor by 53 places, Berdych brought the Czech team a welcome point after what began as a unfortunately un-Czech day in Ostravia.

The Swedish team celebrated another win as Joachim Johansson beat Teymuraz Gabashvili, 6-3, 7-6(4) 6-4, taking the score to 2:0 against Russia. Johansson is ranked 749 in the world and miraculously beat out the top-ranked Russian player.

In Santiago, Chile, Chileans rejoiced as Paul Capdeville takes a huge victory against John Isner, 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4.  Isner ranks more a 100 points higher than Capdeville and was widely expected to win the match.  With this win, Chile draws even with America, 1:1 to end the first day of play.
