(June 8, 2012)—Sunday’s French Open final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal just might be the most highly anticipated final in French Open history. Here’s a quick look at some of the key numbers for each player, followed by a match-by-match inspection of their statistics en route to the final.

Djokovic’s Milestones:

Trying to become the first player to hold all four Grand Slams since 1969. Only Rod Laver and Don Budge have held all four at the same time. Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have each had an opportunity to complete the task, but none succeeded.

Djokovic is bidding to pass Roger Federer and move into second place for the longest all-time Grand Slam match winning streak with 28. Rod Laver has a 29-match streak, and Roger Federer is currently tied with Djokovic at 27. Nadal’s longest streak is 25.

Djokovic is trying to become the first man since 1992 (Jim Courier) to win the Australian Open and the French Open in the same year. Only 8 men have done so in the history of the sport.

Nadal’s Milestones:

Nadal is bidding to become the first man in history to win 7 French Open titles. He is currently tied with Bjorn Borg at 6.

Nadal is hoping to become the 6th man to win 7 titles at any Grand Slam event. Only one player has done so in the Open Era (Pete Sampras, 7 Wimbledon titles).

If Nadal wins at Roland Garros, he would become the third-youngest man to win 11 majors. At 26 years, 7 days on Sunday, only Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer would have won their 11th Slam title at a younger age than Nadal. Both Borg and Federer were 25, but Borg was 333 days younger when he achieved the feat.
