Stats: Roger's Indoor Realm

A look at Roger Federer's dominant record at indoor events.

By Chris Oddo

(October 10, 2012) -- With the ATP's indoor season about to begin, and Roger Federer in action this week in Shanghai for the first time since helping the Swiss Davis Cup team back to the World Group in early September, it's high time that we bone up on some of Roger's achievements under the roof.

With his hometown event in Basel set for October 22nd, followed by the Paris Masters on October 29th, and the ATP World Tour Finals on November 5th, Federer fans should get plenty of opportunities to see the Swiss Maestro work his magic in the cozy indoor confines that he loves so much.

It comes as no surprise that Federer has the most wins (217) and the highest winning percentage (.807) on indoor surfaces among active players. But what is really remarkable about Federer's perma-roofed resume is the fact that he owns a 4-0 record versus his archrival Rafael Nadal on hard courts. Considering the fact that Federer is 10-18 vs. Nadal lifetime, and 2-5 on outdoor hard courts, one has to admit that Roger's indoor dominance is indeed jaw-dropping.

Here's a list of the current top 5 indoor players, by winning percentage:

The stats say that Federer is not the only player that has had success under a roof. Of note is the performance of Milos Raonic. The 21-year-old is just getting started in his career and he's already won 23 matches and 2 titles indoors, good for second among active players in each category.

Down the road Raonic's numbers will be even more impressive, particulary in the title count category. Perhaps, given Raonic's strong play in Tokyo last week, the Maple Leaf Missile is ready to improve upon those numbers in the upcoming weeks.

Federer, who owns pretty much every tennis record known to man, has his work cut out for him if he wants to finish his career as the all-time indoor title holder. In fact, given that he's 32 titles behind John McEnroe, he might want to lobby to the ATP to put a roof over every tournament. He's also quite a bit behind McEnroe in winning percentage too. I guess not even Roger Federer can own every record.
