The Book On Venus

(August 2, 2010) Venus Williams' right wrist was in rapid-fire action on Friday night. Venus wasn't crunching serves, she was making her mark on a page-turning evening.
Williams visted the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles to sign copies of her latest book, Come To Win: Business Leaders, Artists, Doctors, and Other Visionaries on How Sports Can Help You Top Your Profession.
The book was a smashing success in its first week, debuting at No. 5 on the Los Angeles Times' non-fiction best seller list.
Williams' book (Amistad, $25.99) was one of sports books in the Top 25. "Come to Win" settled in one place ahead of "Win Forever," an advice book on succeeding by former USC and current Seattle Seahawks' head football coach Pete Carroll.
The release of Carroll's book is quite ironic, given that his former college emplyoer has come under heavy fire in recent months after the NCAA hit it with numerous violations for both football and men's basketball.
Carroll has denied any knowledge of wrong doing during his tenure as head coach. Also on the list at No. 15 is "Coming Back Stronger," the comeback tale of New Orleans Saints' quarterback Drew Brees.
Williams' paperwork hasn't been confined to scripting her autograph between the covers. The five-time Wimbledon winner has been hitting the books at summer school in pursuit of her interior design degree.
"I have been doing a lot of schoolwork, which has kept me really busy," Williams said. "Since I am back in school to get my interior design degree, the summer school classes are only five weeks long so they are really intensive. I have assignments due almost every day. It has been really fun doing all my drawings and projects though. I am learning a lot!"
During her down-time in Los Angeles, Venus, who is accustomed to both the heat and humidity of Florida, has been training and is scheduled to play next week's Western & Southern Financial Group Open in Cincinnati.
The World No. 4 holds a 397-point lead over fifth-ranked Samantha Stosur, who is scheduled to play this week's Mercury Insurance Open at La Costa Resort and Spa.
