Dominic Thiem didn’t manage a win on grass this season, but the 20-year-old Austrian proved once again that he’s one of tennis’s rising stars with a big win over fellow up-and-comer Jiri Vesely in Hamburg on Monday, 7-5, 6-0.

“Tough match against a very good friend,” said Thiem of his first-round victory. “I know him since a very long time, we played juniors together—same age.”

Thiem, who dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Vesely the last time they met on the futures tour (in 2012), says he didn’t like having to meet his friend, but was nonetheless pleased with the result.

“I was not really happy with the draw, but I think I played well, especially in the second set.”

Thiem earned 16 break points on the match, breaking the left-handed Czech five times. Additionally, the Austrian won 15 of 20 second-serve points against Vesely.

After a poor serving performance in the first set in which Thiem only made 30 percent of first serves, he rallied in the second set and only dropped three points on serve.

Thiem will face 8th-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain in the second round.

In other results, Dustin Brown upset Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain, 7-6(5), 6-3, to set up a second-round encounter with Fernando Verdasco.

Other winners on Monday were Pablo Andujar, Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic, Benoit Paire, Tobias Kamke, Mikhail Kukushkin, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Gastao Elias.

The 16 seeded players at the event all received a bye into the second round.
