(May 17, 2011) Jelena Jankovic advanced to the second round of the Brussels Open in Brussels, Belgium, after defeating Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-3, Tuesday.

Francesca Schiavone also defeated Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 7-5.

World No. 28, Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, rallied from a set down to defeat Polona Hercog 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Peng Shuai, ranked 31st but the eighth seed, dropped a set to Kirstin Flipkens before beating her 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.

Ayuma Morita of Japan outlasted China’s Zheng Jie 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and Americans Abigail Spears and Irina Falconi both advanced, beating their opponents in straight sets.

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki will play Wednesday.  

At the Internationaux de Strasbourg in France, second-seeded Andrea Petkovic defeated fellow German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 6-1, and Lucie Hradecka dismissed American Ahsha Rolle 6-3, 6-4.

Frenchwoman Alize Cornet defeated India’s Sania Mirza 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and Mirjana Lucic beat American Christina McHale 7-5, 7-6 (7).

Before her match, Ana Ivanovic withdrew because of a left wrist injury.
