Tsonga, Cilic Rankings Shift After Tournament Wins

By Nick Georgandis

(November 1, 2011) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin Del Potro both enjoyed the fruits of reaching the Vienna final on Sunday, each moving up a position in the latest ATP rankings.

Champion Tsonga (a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4) victory, climbed up to eighth in the rankings, a step ahead of American Mardy Fish, while runner-up Del Potro moved to 14th, displacing American Andy Roddick.

Del Potro is trying to fight his way back into the Top 10 after his catastrophic injury early in 2010 sent him plummeting as far down as No. 485 in the world.

He had been ranked as high as fourth after his historic upset of Roger Federer at the 2009 US Open.

The rest of the Top 20 stayed as is, with the exception of Marin Cliic, who jumped up two spots to No. 20 following his tournament title at the St. Petersburg Open, which included a title-match win over No. 13 Janko Tipsarevic.

This is Cilic's first title of the season, and the 23-year-old Croat's first overall since 2010 Zagreb, where he is a two-time defending champion at. It's his sixth title to date.

The biggest move in the Top 100 came from Brazil's Ricardo Mello, who surged 25 spots to No. 84 thanks to his Challenger win at San Jose Do Rio Preto. It's his second straight Challenger tournament title as the 30-year-old, who peaked at No. 50 in 2005, tries to get back into tour shape.
