(November 27, 2011) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was attempting to become the first French player to win the year-end title. Tsonga won $740,000 and 800 points as London finalist for getting through Tomas Berdych, Rafael Nadal, and Mardy Fish to face Federer twice in the tournament. He lost 3-6, 7-6(6), 3-6, but expressed his content with the way he played and had nothing negative to say.
“I'm just happy tonight because I had a good week. Of course, to win is better. But anyway, you know, I give everything. Tonight I can see myself in the mirror and say, Yeah, you fight enough,” said Tsonga in his post-match conference. “I was a bit lucky to play three sets today.”
He was reminded that he said that on last Sunday he felt the crowd was more behind Federer than him but today, the crowd cheered on the underdog,
“I was surprised because they support me a lot. They support me a lot. It was really fair from the English crowd. But anyway, you know, it's sport. It's really good when it's like this.”
The World No. 6, who could be looking at a ranking raise come Monday, said the highlight of the year was his ability to be consistent and head strong.
“You know, my biggest achievement was maybe because I was more consistent, consistent in my head, and that's why I was good this year.”
He also said what he needs to work on to get better, “I have to work hard, you know, my body to be quicker on the court, to move better. Maybe if I move better next year, I will have some better results. “
According to the ATP, he shot 42 aces this week and has struck an ATP World Tour season-best 825 aces.
