Tsonga Battles Into Qatar Open Second Round

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived a tough three-set test from 118th-ranked Malek Jaziri of Tunisia to advance to the second round of the Qatar Open in Doha on Tuesday.

Tsonga, the third seed, served 12 aces and saved five break points en route to a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-1 win. It was the Frenchman’s first match since he lost to
Roger Federer in the final of the ATP World Tour Finals in November.

He faces 75th-ranked Flavio Cipolla of Italy, who he’s never played on the ATP World Tour.

Croatian giant
Ivo Karlovic started his season off well with a 6-7 (1), 6-2, 7-6 (3) win against Sergiy Stakhovsky, Matthias Bachinger defeated Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain 6-3, 6-4 and Denis Gremelmayr dismissed Potito Starace 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, at the Aircel Chennai Open in Chennai, India,
Victor Hanescu beat American Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-4, Yen-Hsun Lu ousted Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 6-3, Andreas Beck edged Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-6 (8) and Yuichi Sugita beat eighth-seeded Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4.
