In another Williams sister reveal, Venus Williams has withdrawn from the French Open.

She joins her sister,
Serena, in not attending the tournament. Serena is currently recovering from a serious medical scare with a pulmonary embolism.

Venus has not been spared from injury herself, having not played since the Australian Open in January due to an abdominal injury.

With both sisters missing, this will be the first Slam in eight years to not include at least one of the top-ranked players.

Venus has consistently played the clay Slam since 1998, but has only made it to the finals once, in 2002, when she lost to her sister.

She will be replaced in the draw by the Russian Vesna Dolonts, currently ranked No. 111.

Meanwhile, Belgium's Kim Clijsters announced that she will be playing at Roland Garros, despite having no matches on clay this year.

An injury to her wrist, shoulder and ankle kept her off the tour for two months this year.

She played her last match at the WTA Premier event in Miami, where she lost to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets.

Overuse may have been the cause of Clijsters’ injuries, but she also hurt her ankle at a cousin’s wedding while she was wearing high heels, according to the Associated Press.

Two weeks ago, she resumed training, and with the help of some athletic tape she believes she can play well at Roland Garros.

"Playing is going wonderful. I am hitting the ball very well and increasingly I am going for it," she said. "I am not totally without pain, but the strong tape around my ankle gives me sufficient security."

Although she hasn’t played a tournament match on red clay this year, she said her previous experience in Grand Slam tournaments will help her adapt quickly.

"The advantage is that I still have the spirit of the past Grand Slam tournaments. If I play well, I can win. Attitude is very important, even though the situation is physically very different."
