(September 2, 2011) Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva defeated 30th seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, in the third round of the US Open Friday.
Though Zvonareva had 35 unforced errors (eight more than Medina Garrigues), she won 80 percent of her first serve points and served six aces.
"There were couple times, couple downs throughout the match. That's something I'm not really happy about, but, you know, overall it showed when I needed I came up with some good tennis and good shots," Zvonareva said.
She needed her best tennis when she found herself down a break in the second set, but she said a tactical adjustment brought her back into the match.
"I think I stepped up a little bit at that moment, and I think it's something that comes naturally from me. You know, I feel like when there are those tight moments ‑ first of all, I'm enjoying playing tough matches ‑ but then those tough moments, I really feel like that's where I'm able to produce my best tennis," she said. "It's something that, you know, comes naturally. I'm really happy about it, and, yeah, it helps me a lot to win a lot of matches.
Zvonareva will go on to play against either American Irina Falconi or German Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round.
Monica Niculescu upset 27th-seeded Lucie Safarova, 6-0, 6-1. Outstandingly, Safarova had 43 unforced errors, compared Niculescu’s minimal four. Though Safarova has nearly four times the number of winners, her serve was lacking, winning only 62 percent of her first serves and a mere 16 percent of her second serves.
Niculescu relied heavily on her first serve and had a second serve only six times, three of which she won. Niculescu will play Angelique Kerber in the fourth round.
