WTF Update: Ferrer, Marray/Nielsen Qualify

By Chris Oddo

(October 16, 2012) – David Ferrer became the fifth singles player to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour finals on Monday, and the Wimbledon-winning doubles tandem of Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen became the fifth doubles team to qualify.

World No. 5 Ferrer will be making his third straight appearance at the event, to be held Nov. 5-12 at London's O2 Arena.

The 30-year-old has won five titles on three different surfaces this year, compiling a record of 62-14 which includes semifinal appearances at the French Open and the U.S. Open.

Marray became the first Brit to win Wimbledon in men's doubles in 76 years in 2012, alongside his Danish partner Frederik Nielsen. It was Marray and Nielsen's first tour-level appearance as a team.

The British-Danish duo qualified on the strength of their Grand Slam title combined with a guaranteed top 20 finish in the men's doubles race to the ATP Finals.

"With their doubles win at Wimbledon this year, Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen produced one of the great stories of the tennis summer," said ATP Chairman and Executive President, Brad Drewett. "Their qualification is further great news for the home fans at the 02, who will now have a British representative in the doubles competition, as well as Andy Murray in singles."

Three spots in men's singles and men's doubles are still available, with less than three weeks left to go.
