Mardy Fish made his long awaited return to tennis with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Bobby Reynolds on Sunday at Indian Wells.

(March, 10, 2013) -- Just like the last seven months of his life, which saw Mardy Fish regularly contemplate retirement and probably even his mortality at times, Fish's 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over fellow American Bobby Reynolds was no walk in the park. But in the end Fish proved himself up to the task of returning to the ATP Tour with a stunning, eleventh-hour comeback, winning 16 of the final 19 points to advance to the third round where he will face the winner of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and James Blake.

"I'm fighting a lot of demons in my head at the moment, but it's nice just to play," Fish said on-court after the one hour and fifty-seven minute struggle that featured nine breaks of serve in total and a 41 percent first-serve percentage from Fish on the day.

What Fish's effort might have lacked in artistry and mastery it more than made up for in courage and fortitude. It's been a long road for Fish, and he'll be the first to tell you he's not out of the woods yet. It is this openness, and his willingness to admit that he's still afraid, that makes Fish so easy to root for.
