Wordplay: Tennis Players Love Usain Bolt, Andy Murray Can't Sleep and More...

By Chris Oddo

Sara Errani French Open (August 12, 2012) -- The switch from grass to hard court has proven to be a difficult task for so many of the tours top pros this week. There were scads of withdrawals and upsets in Canada, and the rain tested the patience of those who were still left standing.

In spite of it all, there were quotes and tweets--and plenty of 'em--to help us pass the time without worrying about who was going to fall prey to the injury bug next:

"Against Serena [Williams] I won once and lost once, but I never felt like I couldn't do anything. Against Petra [Kvitova] today I was under the impression I just couldn't play. She's able to play a winner from anywhere on the court and whatever ball you send her. She takes your control away. I never felt like this against Serena or [Maria] Sharapova." -- an impressed Marion Bartoli, speaking of Petra Kvitova after her third-round 6-1, 6-1 loss to the Czech.

While some players were getting used to the hardcourts in North America, others were watching the Olympics...

------

Andy Murray tried to stop watching the Olympics, but when his knee started to bother him he revealed that he was still back in London in spirit.

"The last few days have just gone so quick. I've been not really sleeping much in the evening at all. Normally I sleep for nine, 10 hours a night. Maximum I've been sleeping four hours a day. That suggests I'm still fairly excited about it. The tournament was the best tournament of my life." -- Andy Murray, telling reporters in Toronto that he's still too excited about his gold medal to sleep.

"I still didn’t touch the walls, but I did take a shower. Flip-flops, always." -- Promising 17-year-old Eugenie Bouchard, on the less-than-luxurious showers at the WTA's recently held event in Washington, DC. In this piece, Bouchard mentions that the showers were in trailers at the back of the site, and that the women considered to refuse to shower.

------

“Jo walked into a fire hydrant (sticking out of a building) while walking in the streets," -- A statement from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's agent described one of the weirdest injuries you'll ever hear about. Eight stitches later, we've seen the last of Jo-Willy until the US Open.

------

Even when Caroline Wozniacki plays well (she made the semis in Montreal this week) people are hard on her. My question is: is she happy for Rory, jealous of Rory, or both?

It makes you wonder: Why can't we all just be nice like this nice tweeter?

"He doesn't cover the net like a hawk. You can pass him." -- Brad Gilbert, lamenting the lack of net savvy displayed by John Isner in his semfinal loss to Richard Gasquet in Toronto.
