Yanina Wickmayer Struggles To The Finals

(January 7, 2011) Yanina Wickmayer will go on to defend her title at the ASB Classic after beating China's Peng Shuai 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 today.

Not playing quite at her best,
Wickmayer noticeably struggled with her serve throughout the match. However, it wasn't the No.17 player's shortcomings during the game that will most talked about, instead, fans will undoubtedly pinpoint when Wickmayer lost her cool with linesmen and the chair umpire after a series of disputed calls.

It wasn't until the fourth game of the second set that Wickmayer broke Peng's serve, however, the Chinese player wasn't quite done yet and broke back immediately and had two break points on
Wickmayer's following serve. Peng went on to lead, 6-5, but ultimately it was Wickmayer that won the set in a tiebreaker.

In the final set, it was both players that dropped serve in the beginning but
Wickmayer broke to lead 3-2. Peng broke back to tie the match at 5-5 as Wickmayer double-faulted at match point, she was able to recover and broke for a 6-5 lead and after yet another double fault she served out the match.

This victory has placed her in the finals going head-to-head with an unseeded
Greta Arn, who beat Julia Goerges 7-6 (3), 6-3. Arn, who beat out top-seeded Maria Sharapova, was the biggest surprise of the Classic by reaching the main draw only after three other players withdrew and coming to he tournament without her coach.

Arn told the
Associated Press,
"I'm living a dream - I'm definitely playing some of the best tennis of my life."
