Gael Sebastien Monfils (nicknamed "Lamonf") was born to parents Rufin, a former soccer player from the island of Guadeloupe and Sylvette, a nurse from the island of Martinique. He has one younger brother named Daryl. His tennis icon is Arthur Ashe. When not on court, Monfils is often seen listening to music, typically R&B. He is an avid follower of basketball, saying that he would likely choose basketball for his career if he had not chosen tennis. His favorite team is the Detroit Pistons, and Carmelo Anthony is his favorite player.
Monfils enjoyed an incredible amount of success as a junior, finishing 2004 as the top-ranked junior player after capturing the first three Junior Grand Slam titles. In 2003, he was a finalist in the Orange Bowl, losing to Marcos Baghdatis. He was named Newcomer of the Year in 2005.
