Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitovia fell 7-6, 6-3 in the first round to Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, and Maria Sharapova had to rally from losing the first set to beat Heather Watson of Great Britain 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. On the men’s side, America’s top-ranked player, Mardy Fish, beat Tobias Kamke of Germany 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, and Alexandr Dolgopolov, Janko Tipsarevic, Tomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet were among the day’s winners. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic was named as UNICEF national ambassador for Serbia. His role will be to promote early childhood education and children’s rights.

French Open champion Li Na lost to Simona Halep in the first round, meaning that all of this year’s Grand Slam winners are out of the US Open. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic walked into the second round when his opponent, Conor Niland of Ireland, retired because of food poisoning with Djokovic leading 6-0, 5-1. David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando were among the men’s winners of the day. American 22-year-old Donald Young made history as he became the first American to win a match on the National Tennis Center’s new Court 17.

American teenager Christina McHale upset eighth-seeded Marion Bartoli 7-6 (2), 6-2, and another American, Irina Falconi, beat Wimbledon quarterfinalist Dominika Cibulkova in three sets. Another American teen, Jack Sock, won his first ever match at the US Open when he took down Marc Giquel in four sets. Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets, and Julien Benneteau upset 10th-seeded Nicolas Almagro in straight sets.
