James Waterson of Tennis Now reports on this week's tennis news. Gael Monfils earned a big win when he defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal in Doha, while Roger Federer withdrew from the tournament because of a back injury. In Brisbane, Andy Murray will take on Bernard Tomic and in Perth Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic will play Richard Gasquet and Marion Bartoli of France in the Hopman Cup final.

Ted LePak reports on this week’s tennis news for Tennis Now. Francesca Schiavone overcame US Open champion Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Apia International Sydney on Monday. Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova headline the tournament, which featured nine of the world’s top 10 players. There’s much at stake this week, as Kvitova could usurp Wozniacki as the new World No. 1 if she wins the tournament. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic and Wozniacki have been named the top seeds at next weeks’ Australian Open.

Bernard Tomic upset the 22nd seeded, Fernando Verdasco in a match that lasted over four hours. Nadal and Federer advance easily. Victoria Azarenka won 12 straight games to finish off Heather Watson in 67 minutes in the opening match on center court. Watson was anticipated to give last week's Sydney champion Azarenka a bit more of a challenge, however, Azarenka made short work of her in straight sets.
