James Waterson reports the week’s tennis news for Tennis Now. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer returned to action this week at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland. Both men, last year’s finalists, missed the last six weeks because of injury, and they’ve shown some rustiness this week. Yet they’re both in the semifinals, and they’re favored to meet once again the final. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s Paris Masters tournament to rest and prepare for the ATP World Tour Finals and the Davis Cup final. Finally, Petra Kvitova will try to lead the Czech Republic to their first Fed Cup title since 1988, when it was part of Czechoslovakia. But they will have to beat Russia, who has won the title five times in the last seven years, in Moscow.

Spain’s Marcel Granollers won his first hard court title in Valencia, and Ana Ivanovic defended her title at the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali, Indonesia. Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova lead the Czech Republic to their first Fed Cup title since 1988 when they beat Russia 3-2 in Moscow. She defeated Maria Kirilenko and Svetlana Kuznetsova to contribute two of her country’s three wins, and the doubles team of Kveta Peschke and Lucie Hradecka clinched the tie. James Waterson reports the week’s news for Tennis Now. Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after their competitors, Nicolas Almagro, Janko Tipsarevic and Gilles Simon lost before the third round. Berdych defeated Andy Murray to reach the semifinals in Paris, and Roger Federer won his 800th career ATP match when he beat Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5. If Federer wins the tournament, he would reclaim his No. 3 ranking from Murray. The WTA announced it set new records in attendance at its year-end Championships, and it saw a significant increase in web traffic during the tournament. Finally, nine of the top 10 players on the WTA tour are from different countries, which sets a new record.

James Waterson reports the latest tennis news for Tennis Now. Roger Federer won his 800th match as he took the finals of the Paris Masters Series tournament over the weekend. The defeat of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga helps to end the top Swiss contender's year on a high note. Venus Williams faces some lifestyle changes after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease known as Sjogren's syndrome, but is planning a full year of play in 2012.
