(July 1, 2010) Talk is cheap. But skipping out on a press conference proved costly to the Williams sisters.
The All England Club announced today Venus and Serena have both been hit with $4,000 fines for blowing off Wednesday's post-match press conference after the sisters were upset by Vera Zvonareva and Elena Vesnina in Wednesday's doubles quarterfinal.
Serena, who swept Petra Kvitova, 7-6(5), 6-2, to advance to her third consecutive Wimbledon semifinal today, said she was unaware the doubles press conference was mandatory.
"I was unaware. We never do doubles press conferences, in general, from the first round to the second, third, quarters. In the French, we didn't do a doubles press conference after the quarters or the semis," Serena said. "In Australia, we didn't do doubles press conferences. Only usually in the finals they only ask, so I'm shocked to hear that."
Given the fact Serena stands to earn more than $1 million for her Wimbledon singles and doubles results, the fine likely will not cause her to count coins anytime soon.
