Petra Kvitova has been forced to withdraw from Roland-Garros after suffering a freakish ankle injury. The former semi-finalist announced the news on Tuesday on social media, informing the public that she fell and twisted her ankle while completing her pre-tournament press requirements.
Kvitova, who saved a match point en route to a first-round victory over Greet Minnen, hands a walkover to Russia’s Elena Vesnina.
“It is with great disappointment that I announce my withdrawal from Roland-Garros,” she wrote. “During my post-match press requirements on Sunday, I fell and hurt my ankle. Unfortunately after an MRI and much discussion with my team, I made the tough decision that it would be unwise to play on it.”
The No.11-seeded Czech owns a 29-11 lifetime record in Paris, having reached the semis in 2012 and 2020.
