Roland Garros has come too soon for Jessica Pegula and Matteo Berrettini.

Both players withdrew ahead of Thursday’s draw, saying that they weren’t able to recover from injuries in time to make the main draw, which begins on Sunday May 26 in Paris.

Pegula, who has not played since early April, says she plans to be ready for the grass-court season.

“Unfortunately pulling out of @rolandgarros this year,” the World No.5 wrote on Twitter. “I’m just about back to practicing normal (haven’t had any issues for weeks) but played it super safe with recovery and return to play. If I had another 5-7 days I would have been there 100 percent. So I will definitely be back for a full grass season and the rest of the summer and grinding out the rest of the year.”

Berrettini said that he has been training at a high level, but didn’t quite feel ready for best-of-five set matches.

“I will wait to make my return on grass,” said the World No.96.
