Rumors, exacerbated by John McEnroe’s on-air comments, about a rift between Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, were flowing on Sunday in the aftermath of Roger Federer’s withdrawal from the ATP World Tour Finals title match.

“Something went on in the locker room,” said McEnroe on air during ESPN’s broadcast of the match, “there was a long talk between the players that extended well into the night.” (see full video of McEnroe’s comments above)

"I can't confirm all of this," added McEnroe, "but a lot of this went on."

Though neither player has divulged any information, many speculated on social media that the row is due to Wawrinka’s on-court behavior during Saturday’s semifinal loss to Federer. The Swiss spoke out against somebody in the crowd, chastising that person for talking before he served at a crucial juncture of the third set, and many believe that the person he was addressing was actually Federer’s wife, Mirka.

“That makes it more complicated for Severin Lüthi (The Swiss Davis Cup captain) because he’s trying to juggle these two players and sort of make sure that both of them are happy and now it appears that neither one of them are completely thrilled as they head to France for the Davis Cup,” said McEnroe.

The Davis Cup Final will be played next Friday through Sunday in Lille, France.

Federer did not meet with members of the media to field questions on Sunday, but in a brief interview with the ATP Tour he said he’d be concentrating on recovery and planned to head to France for the Davis Cup final after that.
