The Latest on Peng Shuai: WTA Responds to “Insufficient” Video Showing Peng at Dinner in Beijing
By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Saturday November 20, 2021WTA CEO Steve Simon has quickly responded to a video of Peng Shuai posted by a Chinese state-run media journalist. See the video below.
I acquired two video clips, which show Peng Shuai was having dinner with her coach and friends in a restaurant. The video content clearly shows they are shot on Saturday Beijing time. pic.twitter.com/HxuwB5TfBk

The WTA, in rapid fashion, released the following statement, which declares that the video in and of itself, even if authentic (which it appears to be) is not enough:"I am glad to see the videos released by China state-run media that appear to show Peng Shuai at a restaurant in Beijing. While it is positive to see her, it remains unclear if she is free and able to make decisions and take actions on her own, without coercion or external interference. This video alone is insufficient. As I have stated from the beginning, I remain concerned about Peng Shuai’s health and safety and that the allegation of sexual assault is being censored and swept under the rug. I have been clear about what needs to happen and our relationship with China is at a crossroads."Additionally, an email sent to the Chinese Ambassador to the United States has been revealed by Christopher Clarey. In it, Simon's requests are detailed: He requests that she be allowed to leave the country or speak live via teleconference with him. He also demands a full and fair investigation into the sexual assault allegations that were made by Peng Shuai on November 2nd.
