Madrid will host the Davis Cup semifinals and finals as the Spanish capital did last year.

The new position doesn't mean the end of Verdasco’s playing days. The Spanish left-hander is substituting as Davis Cup tournament director for one year in place of Albert Costa, who is out due to personal reasons but plans to return in 2022, Kosmos announced.

The 37-year-old Verdasco, who will be assisted by deputy tournament director Francisco Clavet, sounds pumped up for his new position.

"I am especially excited to join the Kosmos team for this edition of the Finals and to be in the role of tournament director for the first time," Verdasco said. "The Davis Cup is a special competition for all players: you play as a team and compete in defense of your country.

"This new format will bring together, for another year, the 18 best teams in the world. It will be an honour for me to contribute my experience and work with the whole team so that players, federations and fans have a great experience and take away great memories. Verdasco played on three Spanish Davis Cup championship squads in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Verdasco was the hero in that 2008 final played in Mar del Plata, Argentina as he partnered Feliciano Lopez for a doubles win then clinched the Cup for Spain defeating Jose Acususo in a five-set singles match.
