Lleyton Hewitt bid farewell to his Grand Slam days on Thursday night in Melbourne as he fell to David Ferrer in straight sets. But Hewitt didn’t go quietly, and made the most of his final opportunity to berate an umpire, too.

After all, what would a farewell be without some fireworks?

Fed up about getting hit with one too many foot faults, Hewitt pleaded to umpire Pascal Maria for some help, and when the Aussie didn’t get it he called Maria an idiot and told him “That’s why everybody in the locker room thinks you’re so full of yourself.”

Hewitt, ever irascible, will be remembered by millions of tennis fans worldwide for his feistiness, his unyielding competitive spirit and his unwavering dedication to his Aussie flag. Pascal Maria will remember him the same way, we suppose, but his memories might be a tad more vivid than most.
