Suddenly surging Gael Monfils is one victory away from overtaking Matteo Berrettini and claiming the final spot at this year’s Nitto ATP Final in London.

The Frenchman rallied behind the boisterous support of the French faithful in Bercy on Thursday to defeat Radu Albot 4-6 6-4 6-1. If Monfils can defeat Canada’s Denis Shapovalov on Friday he will overtake the Italian and clinch his second career qualification at the season-ending championships.

If Monfils succeeds, it will have been a tag-team effort by a pair of veteran Frenchmen. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga knocked off Berrettini in the second round at Paris.

Albot looked to be headed to an uncomplicated victory when he broke for a 6-4 4-3 lead in the second set but he double-faulted on break point in the next game and would win just one of the final ten games of the contest.

Monfils rode the wave of momentum in the final set and dropped just eight of the 34 points that the pair played.

The Frenchman took out Shapovalov in their only previous meeting in five sets at this year’s US Open.
