Daniil Medvedev overcame the shakiest of starts against 18-year-old Jannik Sinner on Thursday at the Palais des Sports in Marseille, but caught his footing quickly to win 12 of the final 15 games and seal a 1-6 6-1 6-2 victory over the World No. 68.

World No.5 Medvedev improves to 8-3 on the season and will move on to face Gilles Simon in the quarterfinals.

Two-time Open 13 champion Simon toppled Aljaz Bedene 7-6(6) 6-4 to reach the last eight earlier on Thursday.

In other action Denis Shapovalov got past Marin Cilic 6-4 4-6 6-2 to take his spot in the last eight. The No.4 seed has earned just four wins this season but he has now won two straight over Cilic, and two of their three career meetings.

The Canadian saved four break points while serving out the opening set. In the third set he broke twice against Cilic and cruised to victory.

Shapovalov cracked 17 aces and saved six of seven break points to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.
