Felix Auger-Aliassime earned a three-set win over second-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut on Saturday in Cologne, to set a final with top-seeded Alexander Zverev.
“This is our first final, but probably not the last,” said the 21-year-old Canadian after he defeated the Spaniard, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, to reach his third final of the year.
Auger-Aliassime won 19 of 22 service points in the third set to pull away from Bautista Agut, and he broke on his only break point of the set.
“In my mind I knew it was goint to be a difficult match,” said Auger-Aliassime. “I kept believing, and I served way better in the third set than I did in the first two sets, so that helped me close the deal.”
Auger-Aliassime will hope the close the deal in another way on Sunday. He has lost all five of his previous ATP final.
Zverev powered past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 7-5, 7-6(3) to reach his 20th career final and second of 2020.
Zverev has taken both meetings – and all four sets – that the pair have contested, with wins over the Canadian in Beijing and Monte-Carlo in 2019.
