In January when American Ann Li reached her first WTA final at Grampians Trophy in Australia, she was never given the chance to compete for the title. She shared the trophy with Anett Kontaveit due to a delay in scheduling that ran the event up against the 2021 Australian Open.

On Sunday, Li finally got the chance to play for another trophy and made the most of it, defeating Colombia’s Camila Osorio 6-1 6-4 to close out a fantastic week by winning her final ten sets of the tournament.

Li is projected to make her Top-50 debut next week, at 48 in the WTA rankings. Li, who was ranked 112 this time last year, was playing her first WTA quarterfinal since Monterrey this March.

The American reeled off seven straight games to lead 6-1, 1-0, but Osorio pushed back and made the second set highly competitive.

Li made 75.4 percent of her first serves and won 67.4 percent of those points, saving three of five break points. Osorio won only 48.3 percent of her first-serve points and was broken five times.

Li hit 15 winners; Osorio hit 12.

Despite the loss it has been a banner year for Osorio, who won her first career title at Bogota this spring and has risen to inside the Top-60 from her starting position at 186 at the beginning of the season.
