Coco Gauff rolled her ankle during the first set of her match with Marie Bouzkova on Tuesday at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati and was forced to retire the match several minutes later, losing 7-5, 1-0 RET.

It’s a difficult moment for the 18-year-old American, who is celebrating her first week at the WTA’s No.1-ranked doubles player, and looking forward to making a splash at the 2022 US Open, in both singles and doubles.

For the moment Gauff and her partner Jessica Pegula are still in the doubles draw, but it doesn’t seem likely that the 12th-ranked American will risk playing with the US Open looming less than two weeks away.

Gauff rolled her left ankle at 5-3 in the first set, and took a medical timeout with Bouzkova leading 6-5, to have it taped.

She returned, and looked nimble, but could only play two more games.

Gauff drops to 30-16 in singles in 2022 with the loss.

Bouzkova, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this summer, also won the title in Prague in July.

She will face Alison Riske in the second round.
