It was business as usual on the red clay for Poland’s Iga Swiatek on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open in Warsaw. Swiatek notched her 18th consecutive win on the clay, remaining undefeated on the red stuff in 2022 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Romanian qualifier Gabriela Lee.

Swiatek improves to 48-4 in 2022 – remarkably she has tied the win total of last season’s win leaders on tour. That total was reached last season by Anett Kontaveit and Ons Jabeur.

Swiatek was pushed by the 146th-ranked qualifier in the 72-minute contest. There was only one break point in the opening set, which was claimed by the Pole in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead.

Meanwhile Swiatek neatly won 19 of 21 points on serve and never faced a break point in the first set.

In the second set she raced out to a 4-0 lead and saved a break point while serving at 4-1 as Lee, a former NCAA player at Texas Tech University, tried to mount a last ditch comeback.

Lee, the all-time Texas Tech leader in No. 1 singles wins, was broken three times in the match, but can hold her head high after putting forth a solid performance.

Swiatek will face France’s Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals at Warsaw. Swiatek won their lone previous meeting in straight sets, in 2019 at Cincinnati.
