Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova capped off a fantastic season by beating the world’s most dominant doubles team in 2022 on Monday night at the WTA Finals.

They also took some revenge.

Knocked out of the Australian open by Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the semifinals in January, the duo exacted revenge by notching a 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 triumph, rallying from 7-2 down in the champion’s tiebreak.

The revenge was double for Mertens, who was partnered with Hsieh Su-Wei when she fell to the Czech duo in the title match at last year’s WTA Finals.

"I was close last year," Mertens said. "I think we played really consistent this tournament. I can’t even believe we won. That super-tiebreak was 7-2? I can’t even remember points.”

Kudermetova claims her fifth WTA doubles title, while Mertens notches her 16th. The pair went 5-0 on the week in Fort Worth.

Despite the loss Siniakova will finish the year as the WTA doubles No.1 for the second consecutive year. The Czech duo was dominant in 2022, winning three major titles and dropping just four matches.
