With her back against the wall against Caty McNally, trailing by a set and 5-3 in the second, Shelby Rogers took the energy of the home crowd and rallied for a magical win at the Credit One Open in Charleston, edging her compatriot, 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-1 to reach the round of 16.

Rogers, the fifth American to book her spot in Thursday’s round of 16, and the South Carolina native said she couldn’t have done it without some home cooking.

“That was some low country magic if I’ve ever seen it,” she said.

Rogers, who stormed back to take 10 of the final 11 games of the match, will try to match her career-best performance at Charleston on Thursday when she faces either Belinda Bencic or Katherine Sebov.

“There are just some matches where you look back and you aren’t really sure what happened,” Rogers said. “This is definitely one of them. She came out super strong, great energy, and super aggressive, really overpowering me. So I just took a step back, gave myself a little ground in the court and just said ‘Make as many balls [as you can]. I’m gonna stay out here and run until my legs fall off and see what happens.’”

With a large group of friends and family cheering Rogers from the packed Credit One Stadium, Rogers improved to 9-8 lifetime in Charleston and 2-0 against McNally. She reached the quarterfinals at Charleston in 2017, and hopes to do it again this week.

“Anywhere else I don’t win that match,” she said. “So thank you guys, it’s all credit to you, bringing the energy, bringing me back and making me believe in myself tonight.”

Five Americans into Sweet 16

Rogers will be joined by a quartet of talented Americans that includes top-seeded Jessica Pegula, 2019 champion Madison Keys, Bernarda Pera and Caroline Dolehide in the round of 16.

Ruthless Pegula improved to 20-6 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 shakedown or Anna Blinkova, while Keys was nearly as menacing, taking out D.C. native Hailey Baptiste, 6-1, 6-2.

Pegula will face three-time quarterfinalist Irina-Camelia Begu on Thursday, while Keys will take on Poland’s Magda Linette.

Dolehide took out Linda Fruhvirtova, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, and will face No.2 seed Ons Jabeur on Thursday; Pera toppled Spain’s Cristina 6-3, 6-4, to earn a date with third-seeded Daria Kasatkina.
