There was a scare early in the second set. Aryna Sabalenka stood at her chair, a concerned look on her face as she stretched out her left thigh.

For a moment there, it looked like Sabalenka’s brilliant 2023 season may have to go on ice for a while, but the Belarusian stiffened her resolve, shook off her injury, and reeled off 17 consecutive points from 1-3 down in the second set to get to match point against Rogers.

It was an impressive display by the World No.2, and enough to get her through her second-round encounter with the dangerous American. She scooted away with a 6-4, 6-3 win and a third-round encounter with Czech Marie Bouzkova.

“I don’t know, something happened in the second set,” Sabalenka said after the match. “We’ll see tomorrow, hopefully I’ll be alright and I’ll be ready for the next match.”

Sabalenka improves to 18-2 on the season and, if she can recover from what ails her, she’ll have a shot to continue winning this week in Miami.

If her reaction to her adversity is any indication – Sabalenka won 20 of the final 22 points of the match – Sabalenka has what it takes to keep her torrid tennis up.
