Speaking ahead of this week’s Monte-Carlo Masters, Roger Federer says he’s benefitted from having an extra training block due to skipping the Miami Open.

Federer says the decision to skip Miami came from playing so much in 2014. In addition to wanting to spend time with the kids on the ski slopes, Federer also said he needed a thick training block to hone his fitness for the long spring and summer ahead.

“I wanted to work out fitness-wise, which is probably the biggest reason,” Federer said. “The amount of matches I played [in '14] I didn’t always have enough time to go on the treadmill or go in the weight room and do all these things. It was a good week for me to use, or two weeks now, and I’ll continue once I leave Monaco again, I’ll keep working hard in Switzerland before I go to Istanbul or Madrid.”

Federer denied the assumption that he took the time off to make a run at his first Monte-Carlo title. When asked if he could put his fingers on why he hadn’t managed a title in Monte-Carlo in his previous eleven appearances, Federer did not hesitate. “I think it’s pretty simple,” he said. “I think No. 1 it’s Rafa—he won here eight times straight. He really didn’t allow other guys to win.”
