U.S. hard courts will soon be art works.

The USTA announced "Art Works", a new five-month initiative to support community tennis programming and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the US Open.

The USTA and US Open sponsor Chase have commissioned five artists to turn tennis courts into their canvas and in the process restore five public tennis facilities across the country.

Tennis facilities in five cities— Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Cincinnati and New York—will be renovated to benefit each city’s local NJTL chapter.

“We aim to change lives through our NJTL network. The goal of the Art Court campaign is to ignite a national conversation around the importance of delivering tennis and street art to underserved communities,” said Katrina Adams, USTA Chairman of the Board and President. “Our NJTLs are amplifying the importance of public courts and their ability to provide youth with rich opportunities for growth, personal development and culture.”

The artists have free rein to re-imagine what a tennis court can look like.

In Miami, the first market, the USTA is working with noted artist collaborative KiiK Creative, to artistically paint two courts at the Norman and Jean Reach Park (see rendering here:).

The bold and striking design presented by KiiK Creative will make these two courts unlike any other tennis courts in the world.

Other artists taking up the challenge include Charlie Edmiston, Justus Roe, Xylene Project and Sen2 Figueroa.
