Barty Set For Grass Return...As a Golfer

Wimbledon winner Ash Barty will be back driving shots on grass this summer—as a golfer.

The former world No. 1, who officially retired from tennis last month, is set to take on fellow sports stars in the inaugural Icons Series golf event at the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey June 30th-July 1st.

The nine-hole, match-play exhibition event will feature boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, England striker Harry Kane, Olympic gold-medal swimmer Michael Phelps and recently retired Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.

The Icon Series will be televised in Barty's native Australia.

Golf champion Fred Couples will captain Team USA while Ernie Els will lead the World team.

A skilled golfer who is engaged to golf pro Garry Kissick, Barty won the Brookwater Golf and Country Club ladies' amateur title earlier this month, collecting $30 for the title.

Barty's game has drawn raves from Icon Series officials.

“She’s absolutely terrific,” Icons Series chief executive Thomas Brookes told the Sydney Morning Herald about Barty. “She did a range session with Ian Poulter, who is one of our future captains in September when she was at the US Open, and she had not hit a golf ball for a while. Ian said, ‘Just hit a few balls and we’ll see how you go’.

“She hit this ball, I don’t know how far. And he turned around and said, ‘You’re having me on. Let’s just take it a bit deeper. Can you do me a high fade?’ And she did a high fade. Then he said, ‘Can you do me a low draw?’ And she did a low draw.

"He said, ‘Oh my goodness, you are something else’. “She’s got those skill sets within her locker. With a bit of practice she can get lower than a three or four handicap. I know she’s really, really excited to be playing in New York and she’s also really keen to bring the concept to Australia.”
