Benoit Paire’s outburst and related tanking incident has left him lighter in the wallet. The Frenchman was fined $16,500 by the ATP, for his multiple racquet smashes and lack of competition during his firs-round loss to Marcos Baghdatis at the Citi Open (see most of the tirade above).

Paire earned $7,130 for his first-round loss at the Citi Open, so he ended up taking quite a loss this week. ($9,370 if you’re scoring at home, and not counting travel expenses, coaching and other costs).

Paire was sanctioned for “audible obscenity, unsportsmanlike conduct and a lack of giving best effort,” and took to Instagram to apologize after the fact.

“It’s true that I got upset yesterday,” wrote Paire, adding: “For those that want to stay on this, no problem, but I am already on to other things.”

He added: “Congratulations to Marcos for yesterday and good luck.”

Paire’s fine is hefty but it falls short of the amount that Nick Kyrgios was fined for impersonating a lewd act with a water bottle at Queen’s Club in June. Ah, tennis—never a dull moment.
