Bob Bryan Had Hip Surgery on Thursday in New York

Mike Bryan won Wimbledon and climbed back to the top of the ATP doubles rankings while his brother Bob was out with a hip injury this summer. Not bad for a quick fix.

As it turns out, Mike will have to get used to life on the tour without Bob as his twin brother has undergone hip surgery this week in New York. Such is life at the age of 40. Bryan took to Twitter on Friday to update fans on his status.

The time frame should be about six months for full recovery, Mike Bryan told Jane Voigt of DownTheTee from the Citi Open.

“He’s going to have surgery unfortunately,” Bryan told Voigt. “He’s having it this week up in New York [with a doctor] who’s one of the best in the world for the hip. It looks like it might be a six-month recovery. He’s hoping to come back a little after the Aussie Open next year.”

Bryan says he plans to continue playing without his brother, primarily with Jack Sock, who is a two-time major doubles champion and is currently ranked 15 in the world in doubles.

“I’m going to finish the year with Jack,” he said. “We’re going to play Toronto, Cincinnati, the Open, and in the fall, hopefully, make the World Tour Finals.”

The Bryan-Sock pairing is currently ninth in the Race to London standings, but technically 8th because Mike and Bob Bryan are currently in second place.

Bryan is playing with former Grand Slam champion Edouard Roger Vasselin of France his week at the Citi Open.
